On Louis Riel Day, join us for a full day of family-friendly activities celebrating Métis identity and history!

Traditional Beading and Poetry

See traditional Métis beading up close with award-winning poet Marilyn Dumont and listen to her express her perspective on identity through poetry.

Marilyn Dumont is an award-winning Canadian poet of Cree/Métis descent. Born in northeastern Alberta, she is a descendant of Gabriel Dumont. An educator and writer, Dumont holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of British Columbia. Her work is widely anthologized. She currently works at the University of Alberta and teaches creative writing.

Traditional Métis Fiddling

Embrace “la joie de vivre” with live fiddle music by Alex Kusturok!

Growing up, Alex followed his mother Patti to old-time dances around Manitoba where he was enriched with Métis fiddle music from a very young age. His father, a treaty Indian from Wabigoon Lake First Nation in Ontario, ensured Alex learned about his Aboriginal heritage, which influenced his music and gave him a set of values by which he lives his life. Alex showcases his culture through music and dance, stories of his upbringing, and a “hard-driving” energy that gets everyone on their feet. He is a popular performer, instructor and competition judge across Canada and has released two albums, “Groove” (2009) and “For Old Times Sake” (2014).
