We announce the good news that after overcoming many obstacles the Philippines Delegation--Our Land, Our Rights, Our Peace is coming to Canada. Five Indigenous, political and church leaders will arrive in late March. You will recall this delegation had to be postponed because of the violent dispersal of a peaceful demonstration at the US embassy in Manila in October that prevented some of the delegates from traveling until this year.
This is an ideal time for the Government of Canada to hear about the need to regulate Canadian mining overseas and to honour the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples both here in Canada and also as related to Canadian operations around the globe. These Filipino voices will add to Canadian voices calling for an Ombudsperson to investigate the negative impacts of Canadian mining.
The delegation kicks off in Ottawa on March 20 with meetings, public events, and a national press conference on Parliament Hill on March 22.
The next stop is Calgary, where TVI Pacific Inc. has its headquarters. The mining operations of TVI’s Philippine subsidiary, TVI Resource Development Inc., have negatively impacted lands and communities in the Philippines. Following events in Calgary, one part of the delegation will stay in Alberta and travel to Edmonton, while the other travels to Montreal (Mar 25-29), and then Winnipeg (Mar 30-31). The delegation reunites in Toronto on April 1.
